HEROISM IS OFTEN SUBTLE

March 12, 2019

This is Jess, be more like Jess.

Quick story:
Last Monday Jess came to me and informed me that she had to use her jiu jitsu. Jess is a softball coach at one of the local universities and was on her way back from Gulf Shores, AL when they stopped for a quick restroom break. Only Jess went in and as she was coming out of the bathroom she heard someone scream "Help! I'm being robbed!". As she made her way to the counter she saw what was happening, it was in fact a robbery. She couldn't spot a weapon but the assailant was violently attacking the woman behind the counter (he had already beat her pretty bad). Jess approached the counter and made her presence known to the assailant. Knowing he was outnumbered, he grabbed what he could and headed towards the door where Jess was waiting. He shoulder checked her and made his way out the door. That shoulder check caused the assailant to touch the door, therefore leaving fingerprints - he was apprehended by the authorities that same night.

When Jess first came to me, she acted a bit embarrassed that she didn't hit that perfect Double Leg that we work on or maybe the O Goshi we've worked on. I quickly assured her that even I may not have been able to execute a proper technique in a situation like that. When it comes to self defense, it can be very difficult to gauge the perfect reaction. We never know if there is in fact a weapon that the perpetrator in concealing. What really made me happy was that this amazing young lady had the heart to stand up for someone in need. I'd like to think that her time spent on the mats has added to her confidence and allowed her to be brave in a situation that many wouldn't. Sometimes self defense (or defense of others) is simply just making yourself heard. Had she not stepped in, how much damage could he have done to that lady behind the counter? There is no way to know but regardless, he stopped. He stopped because someone stood up to him. He stopped because in that moment HE was scared. I was amazed to hear this story and am so proud of Jess for stepping up in that time of need. She is an amazing coach, mother, daughter, wife, training partner, and friend - we are so lucky to have her!
